چکیده

We propose a new empirical method to estimate the total far-infrared flux of galaxies from the spectral energy distribution (SED) at wavelengths λ≤ 100μm. It is difficult to derive the total far-infrared luminosity from only the IRAS data, though it is one of the most important properties of galaxies. Observations by Infrared Telescope in Space (IRTS) indicate that the SED of the diffuse emission from the Galactic plane in this wavelength region can be derived from the 60 μm to 100 μm color. This empirical SED relation was improved in order to obtain a better fit to the Galactic plane data for Iν(60 μm)/Iν(100 μm) > 0.6, and applied to 96 IRAS galaxies for which ISOPHOT and KAO data are available at λ > 100 μm. As a result, the empirical relation describes well the far-infrared (FIR) SED for a majority of the galaxies. Additionally, the total FIR flux for λ ≥ 40 μm is derived from the flux densities at 60 and 100 μm by using this model. For the 96 IRAS galaxies, the uncertainty in the total far-infrared flux of the present method is 26 %. The present method is more accurate than the previous one widely used to derive the total infrared flux from the IRAS 60 and 100 μm data.

DASTWAR: a tool for completeness estimation in magnitude-size plane

Today, great observatories around the world, devote a substantial amount of observing time to sky surveys. The resulted images are inputs of source finder modules. These modules search for the target objects and provide us with source catalogues. We sought to quantify the ability of detection tools in recovering faint galaxies regularly encountered in deep surveys. Our approach was based on com...

A Bridge from Optical to Infrared Galaxies: Explaining Local Properties, Predicting Galaxy Counts and the Cosmic Background Radiation

We give an explanation for the origin of various properties observed in local infrared galaxies, and make predictions for galaxy counts and cosmic background radiation (CBR), by a new model extended from that for optical/near-infrared galaxies. Important new characteristics of this study are that (1) mass scale dependence of dust extinction is introduced based on the size-luminosity relation of...

Expected Sub-mm Emission and Dust Properties of Lyman Break Galaxies at High Redshift

We investigate expected sub-mm emission and dust properties of the Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) in the Hubble Deep Field (HDF). The SCUBA Deep Survey (Hughes et al., 1998) provides an upper limit of the 850μm flux densities of the LBGs. With this constraint, we argue that a typical ultra-violet to far-infrared spectral shape of the high-redshift LBGs is rather close to a template spectrum of low...

SCUBA observations of galaxies with metallicity measurements: a new method for determining the relation between submm luminosity and dust mass

Using a new technique we have determined a value for the constant of proportionality between submillimetre (submm) emission and dust mass, the dust mass absorption coefficient (κd) at 850μm. Our method has an advantage over previous methods in that we avoid assumptions about the properties of dust in the interstellar medium. Our only assumption is that the fraction of metals incorporated in the...

A Backward Evolution Model for Infrared Surveys: the Role of Agn- and Color-ltir Distributions

Empirical “backward” galaxy evolution models for infrared bright galaxies are constrained using multi-band infrared surveys. We developed a new Monte-Carlo algorithm for this task, implementing luminosity dependent distribution functions for the galaxies’ infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and for the AGN contribution, allowing for evolution of these quantities. The adopted SEDs take...
